Tamil Nadu Governor C Vidyasagar Rao has cleared the confusion over the political uncertainty in the state by appointing K Palanisamy as TN’s next chief minister.
He is likely to be sworn in as Tamil Nadu CM at 4 pm today.
The governor has also directed K Palanisamy “to seek the vote of confidence of the Assembly within fifteen days.”
This decision was communicated by the Governor to Palanisamy when the latter and the AIADMK senior party leaders visited the Raj Bhavan at 11.30 am today.
Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan’s press release:
K Palanisamy hence becomes the third CM of TN in less than three months.
Palaniswami, an AIADMK party member, is an MLA of Edappadi in the Salem district of Tamil Nadu. After V K Sasikala (also known as Sasikala Natarajan) had been convicted in the disproportionate assets case on Tuesday, she appointed Palanisamy as AIADMK’s Legislature Party Leader.
A day later, on Wednesday evening, Palanisamy met Governor Rao and submitted the signatures of 124 MLAs who supported him in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. He hence requested the Raj Bhavan to invite him to form the government.
On Wednesday, Governor Rao had also met the O Pannerselvam camp, who along with four other ‘rebel’ MLAs had been expelled from AIADMK by Sasikala Natrajan on 14th February.
In the meeting, Panneerselvam gave a representation to the Governor claiming “majority” support and seeking an opportunity to demonstrate it. Although, O Pannerselvam had support of only 10 MLAs.
Meanwhile, at 3 pm today, the Election Commission will hear the petition that challenges the appointment of Sasikala Natarajan as general secretary of the AIADMK.
