The Supreme Court of India has agreed to hear the plea of ‘Jolly LLB 2′ producers’ against the Bombay High Court order for appointing a committee to review the Akshay Kumar starrer film before its release.
Recently, an advocate named Ajay Waghmare filed a case against the movie so that the makers would drop the ‘LLB’ from its title.
His petition stated that ‘LLB’ in the film title is “a deliberate attempt to malign the judiciary”. He furthermore said that the soon-to-be-released movie tries to tarnish the image of court judges who “dispense justice as a sacred duty.”
In response, the Waghmare’s petition was ordered to turn into Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and the Bombay High Court formed a three-member panel to examine the matter thoroughly.
Soon after, on Wednesday, the producers of ‘Jolly LLB 2’ rushed to the Supreme Court to challenge Bombay High Court’s order.
The producer, Fox Star Studios, argued that ‘Jolly LLB 2’ is not a new film but a sequel to the earlier film Jolly LLB. They stated that no problems were faced during the screening of ‘Jolly LLB’, which was released a few years back.
They also said that there was nothing objectionable in ‘Jolly LLB 2’ and the movie has been already approved by the censor board, with U/A certificate already being granted to the film.
The bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Jagdish Singh Khehar, after a brief hearing agreed to hear the plea on Friday, 3rd Feb.
This is not the first legal hurdle faced by ‘Jolly LLB 2’. Earlier, shoe brand Bata sued the movie makers for allegedly defaming their footwear in the first trailer of the film.
The original trailer has since then been removed from Youtube and other similar websites by the producers.
The courtroom drama movie ‘Jolly LLB 2’ is directed by Subhash Kapoor and slated to release on February 10.
‘Jolly LLB 2’ is a sequel to ‘Jolly LLB’, which starred Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani in lead roles. The second instalment of the franchise stars Huma Qureshi, Akshay Kumar, Annu Kapoor and Saurabh Shukla.
