I recently visited the Britania & Company Restaurant in Fort, Mumbai. It is one of those old legendary restaurants run by the same family for ages now. This is a place you visit for the ambiance. Started in the year 1923, it seems like they’ve retained the look ever since. 3 flags adorn their walls – Indian, British & Iranian. Rest is a typical Irani setup. When you step in, you literally travel back in time 50-60 years ( But the prices are more than modern).
We ordered their signature dishes – Mutton Berry Pulav & Salli Boti, along with Raspberry Soda & Caramel Custard. The food was in fact very good but not soul-stirring or brilliant in any sense. The Berry Pulav is a little sweet for my taste overall and the price tag of Rs. 650 for it is a tad too expensive in my opinion. But it is balanced by sheer quantity and taste of the Pulav.
The Salli Boti was yet again a little on the sweeter side but it tasted well with bread. Ice cream soda is nothing but soda with vanilla essence in it, worth a try once. The raspberry soda though, no one can drink just once, you have to go for one more. Caramel custard was good too and had a nice burnt sweet taste to it.
The best part might be when the 94-year old owner, Mr. Boman Kohinoor, personally greets as many customers as possible, and strikes a conversation welcoming us & engaging us with loads of information about the history of the eatery. The table service is quick & courteous too.
Overall, it is a place that primarily attracts tourists & of course SoBo Parsi food lovers who don’t mind the dollar-equivalent rates. It costs roughly Rs. 1500 for a 2 person meal.
Food – ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
Service – ★★★★☆ (4/5)
Ambiance – ★★★☆☆ (3.5/5)
Value For Money – ★★☆☆☆ (2/5)
Don’t forget to share this review with your friends, so they know what to to look up to when visiting the Britania & Company.
